Harajuku Takeshita Street & Cat Street

Harajuku's Takeshita Street is one of Tokyo's most sensory-overwhelming experiences — 350 meters of shops selling crepe-wrapped candyfloss, gothic lolita dresses, character merchandise, and every conceivable variant of Japanese teen fashion. On weekends, cosplayers and fashion-forward youth use the street as a runway. The human density is remarkable; prices are very low. A 100-yen crepe with strawberry and Nutella from one of the street vendors is mandatory.

Two minutes away, Cat Street (Omotesando-Higashi Dori) offers the tonal opposite: a quiet tree-lined lane of independent designer shops, select vintage stores, and low-key cafés catering to Tokyo's older fashion crowd. Japanese brands like Beams, Studious and Edifice are here alongside international designers. The two streets together represent the breadth of Tokyo's fashion culture in a 15-minute walk.
