Bingin Beach

Bingin Beach is the most photogenic beach on Bali's Bukit Peninsula and arguably one of the most striking beach settings in all of Southeast Asia. Accessed by a steep concrete staircase descending from the clifftop road, the beach sits at the base of dramatic 30-metre limestone cliffs that are dotted with a vertical village of boutique guesthouses, restaurants, and café terraces — all seemingly defying gravity as they cling to the cliff face. The view from any of these clifftop perches at golden hour, with surf breaking in geometric lines below and Java's volcanic peaks visible on clear evenings across the strait, is genuinely extraordinary.

The beach itself is compact — roughly 100 metres of white sand — but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. A world-class left-hand reef break just offshore attracts intermediate and advanced surfers who come specifically for the Bingin wave, one of the most consistent and perfectly shaped breaks in Bali. Non-surfers are content to watch from the shore or from the restaurant terraces above, nursing a cold Bintang while the afternoon light turns the water from turquoise to hammered copper. Swimming is possible at high tide in the section closest to the cliffs, but avoid the surf zone entirely — the reef is shallow and unforgiving.

The guesthouses perched on Bingin's cliffs — places like Mick's Place, Temple Lodge, and Cashew Tree — offer some of Bali's most unique accommodation experiences: basic but charming, with private balconies that look directly down into the surf. Staying overnight and catching the beach at dawn, before the day trippers arrive, reveals a completely different and infinitely more peaceful Bingin.

Getting there: Follow the road through Pecatu towards Padang Padang; turn off at the Bingin sign and descend to the clifftop parking area. The staircase down takes 5–10 minutes. Best time to visit: May–October (dry season) for the best surf and clearest skies.
